Chapter 17

A month passed.

At the gallery, Tina and Nigel were out on the showroom floor, watching workers bringing in wooden crates containing the paintings of Octavia Little.

The Garmey show was done and already torn down, and now it was time to prep for Octavia’s show.

The windows of the gallery, as per Robyn’s usual method when they transitioned from one show to the next, had been covered completely with kraft paper, allowing no one on the outside to look in as the new art was installed. Moreover, both Tina and Nigel were not looking their usual dapper selves.

Nigel was dressed in jeans and a faded London College t-shirt. Tina also had on jeans, but hers were artfully torn, and she had on one of her old graphic tees that she usually didn’t wear out of the flat anymore. But for the next several days, she, Nigel, and Robyn would be slumming it in terms of attire as they did the work needed to transform the gallery into a showcase for Octavia’s mesmerising paintings.

Tomorrow—Saturday—Octavia Little herself would be here, travelling all the way from Amsterdam to help oversee the hanging of her works. In the meantime, the three-person staff of the gallery would unbox all the paintings and arrange them in some semblance of order before Octavia’s arrival.

“What about this big one, mate?” one of the delivery workers asked Nigel. A team of his workers was carrying an enormous crate which housed one of Octavia’s larger canvases.

Tina rolled her eyes.

Unbelievable!

Ever since the delivery truck arrived early this morning, it had been her that had been giving the orders while Robyn was on a conference call with Victoria Linden—the owner of the gallery—and Victoria’s team in London. Yet for some peculiar reason, the delivery foreman was still assuming it was Nigel who was in charge, as opposed to the tiny young woman standing next to him.

Nigel—bless him—made a point of looking at her.

“Against that wall, please,” Tina said politely, pointing to the wall she meant so there wouldn’t be any confusion.

Robyn finally made an appearance. Conference calls with Victoria weren’t unusual, of course, but to Tina it seemed as if this one had lasted inordinately long.

“How’s it going in here?” Robyn asked, surveying the work being done.

“Great!” Tina told her. “How was your chat with Victoria?”

She tried to ask that casually, but the truth was that she was super curious. Especially after Nigel’s little bit of gallows humour.

About fifteen minutes ago, once the two of them had realised that Robyn was still on the phone with London, Nigel had made a crack about hoping Victoria wasn’t shutting them down.

Tina had known it was a joke, but it was exactly the kind of joke prone to make her paranoid because of how plausible it could be, particularly in today’s economy.

“Good news,” Robyn told her and Nigel. “We’ve gotten the go ahead to lease the space next door!”

Tina smiled. Not only was she happy about that news but she was also relieved. Victoria wasn’t shutting them down.
